    The two most notorious arm robbers in the history of Ghana Ata Ayi and Johnson kombian

    Raymond Ayee ayeetey aka Ata ayi was born at Teshie , a suburb of Accra. He became a school dropout at class 4 after his mother went to the UK  . He qualified for his driving license and later became a trotro and cab driver . He known to be  gentle and friendly . 

    In the year 1999, he took a passenger to a community in Akropong and they were involved in an accident which destroyed his master’s car .

    He Came back to Accra unemployed and highly in. Debt  . A good  friend introduced him to a man who needed a skillful driver.

    He met the  new master, who’s name was master Eddie at flamingo a community in Accra .

    Master Eddie was a car hijacker , When he was told about the  nature of his new job which was to drive passengers and rob them halfway their journeys he said he wasn’t Happy’s out it and wasn’t in support of it but later  agreed to it  because he needed the for his pregnant wife and unborn child.

    He wanted to have a car of his  and a self boss.

    He (Ata ayi) finally agreed to be  the gang’s driver  ,as they loot people’s cars and robbed from people .

    They monitored customers  of banks who go to withdraw money ,  attack them , rob  and drive away . 

    in 1999 , they stole an amount of 12 million cedis ( old currency ) of which he pocketed 2.5 million cedis .

    They mostly  targeted people who went to banks , attacked buses and looted cars . 

    It was believed  he had  charms and vodoo amulets which protect him from gun shots and from being nabbed by the police . 

    A massive manhunt and announcement was made  for the arrest of him  and his gang members .

    He was very skillful in driving and was capable of even stealing money while in traffic .

    As per police records Ata ayi was capable of  reversing a car at speed of over 100 kph, a stunt or skill which could be seen in American movies  . 

    He became powerful and a popular notorious thief and gang leader.  he and his gang once followed a man from his bank where the target  had withdrawn an amount 22million cedis. 

    when the man stopped his car  to  give the money to his wife , ata ayi and his gang raided  them amidst shooting and threats .

    His gang also followed a reverend father from Osu, he had also withdrawn an amount of 56 million cedis from his bank .

    The gang  entered the church but were unable snatch the suitcase of money .

    They entered into one the offices in which a pastor was counting the money , they fired at him and were able to snatch an 6million cedis .

    Per his own words , he said  he and his gang stole money amounting to over 700million cedis and other valuable items such as cars, phones and expensive jewelry . His pictures  were  on billboards all over the country . He became so porpular and wanted , his  name became a household name for perverts and a nickname for urchins. 

    In 2000 ,  rumors of him  lead to the arrest of a suspect who was part of his gang , he took  the police to his house which was in chorkor  in Accra .

    however, he was not at home as he had traveled to the northern region for a funeral . 

    That was when he realized his life and that of his family members was in danger he went into total hideout.

    The police and other security agencies went after him, searching every hook and crook, every corner of the country and as well as his usual residences and where his gang used to operate and live.

    All his gang members had been nabbed or lyched but it seemed he became a spirit , he was no where to be found , he was completely out of sight. 

    Some people in the area and it’s environs even began to tell stories of his prowess , invincibility and powers.

    His capture  and arrest came as a surprise to him when he was assigned as a  foreman to his sister’s property in nungua .

    There was a misunderstanding between his mother and a  tenant  in the house.

    The man insulted his mother which angered ayi to beat up the man because he disrespected his Mum .

    On the 28th February 2005, the police went to his house  and found him hanging  his clothes after washing them . They came to arrest him on  counts of assault and abuse  only to see  the most notorious and most wanted armed robber  in the country . 

    He was then captured amidst tears and also begging the police deliver instant justice to him and to protect him from the mob .

     in custody , he said he was given a nefarious treatment, he was tortured and forced to agree statements and documents which alleged he committed some crimes which he admitted not to have done .

    He was  slapped with a 160 years imprisonment with hard labour and is currently serving his jail term at the nsawam prison .

    Ata ayi who is now a pastor and a born again Christian ,  says he has regretted all his past actions and deeds and has accepted Jesus into his life as his lord and personal savior .

     In an interview with crime check foundation, in prison he said “. I would like DCOP Kofi Boakye to really pay me a visit me. in fact  he saved my life , may God richly bless him “ he said

    [JOHNSON KOMBIAN ]

    Johnson kombian was born Into the  kombian family in nakpanduri in the northeastern region of Ghana 

    His family parents were farmers and “pito  brewers” 

    He dropped out of school at class six and joined a group of local bad boys who where school drop outs and urchins.  

    He was feared to have had voodoo powers and juju amulets which helped  him survive the numerous gunshots he sustained in his operations , it also Made his gang rob  from the local traders without any fear or form of agitation.

    His  physique and body structure made his appearance fearsome which made the people  in his area  fear him . 

    It was believed that he could threaten to attack and rob you and true to  his words he’ll attack you  and make away  with your  money .

    He soon became very popular in nanpanduri , bunkpurugu and it’s environs , his name also  became a household name for thieves and recalcitrant people .

    His downfall begun  when he and  his gang threatened a man and  his family and stole  their hard earn money and  a 3-batterry music player .

    The issue  was then  sent before the nankpanduri chief who  summoned him before his elders 

    But Kombian gave them no listening ear and rejected their call .

    The matter was then forwarded to the police station and 

     policemen were tasked  for their arrest  but Johnson and his boys upon seeing them fled  the town , they were followed and were engaged in a deadly gun battle which lasted for over   an hour .

    They shot two policemen to death and several others were badly  wounded.

    He , and his  gang fled the town and were rumored to have settled in  kpamoak , a village in northern Togo .

    A nationwide announcement was made for his immediate arrest  , his pictures where on all billboards in nankpanduri , bunkpurugu all over Ghana.

    He was finally arrested upon his arrival in Ghana to see  his wife .

    He was taken to the Tamale central prison and was remanded.

    defending himself in a court hearing at the Tamale circuit court, 

    He said “In fact, since the day I was born, it was the only time I got involved in such problem and also my first time in  prison, I have never taken part in any form of armed robbery and as such I cannot be called an armed robber,”

    He was then sentenced to 6 years in prison .

     few months later he tactically broke jail and escaped beating up a pedestrian and taking his apsonic motorbike Which was later named after him .

    On October 17, 2010, he was rearrested  and was condemned to 40 years in imprisonment on counts of Robbery and theft , murder, jail break and  vehicle jacking . 

    Johnson, who is now repented is currently serving his jail term at the nsawam prison praying and awaiting presidential pardon.
